recommended Reading, recipe books and More
We have been gluten free for 11 years now, and gluten-free, dairy free for about five. Happily, gluten-free vegan recipes cover the majority of allergies, intolerances and sensitivities in my family. We are gluten free, vegans who eat meat. There have been a lot of flops those years, so am limiting this list to recipe books with enough recipes that we know work well, to justify the cost. I will be adding to this list as I stumble on more books that we have success with. I will also add that no recipes from these books have been included in my Recipe Bank out of respect for the many hours that have been put into the researching, writing, testing and publishing of these books. Do yourself a favour and buy them, you won’t regret it.
RECIPE BOOKS
The following is a short list of the recipe books in my pantry, and are generally my go to books.
MAGAZINES, WEBSITES, NEWSLETTERS AND APPS
Many of these magazines, websites and apps focus on gluten-free as gluten flour is one of the most challenging things to replace. All of them have some component that covers other food sensitivities, and offer their substations of choice. Remember to be open to new ideas, and experimenting will help you source out recipes and ideas to expand your world. There are so many more than could be listed here, so if you have found a good magazine, website, app or newsletter that you like, let me know what it is so that I can include it in future updates.

APPS
I use an iPhone and a quick search in the App Store brought up the following apps that I have done a bit of exploring on. This is not to say that these are the ones for you, so have a look and see what you can find. If you find a good one send me a note and I will include it in page updates.

RECIPE BOOKS
The following is a short list of the recipe books in my pantry, and are generally my go to books.
- From Bunner’s Bakeshop in Toronto, Ontario
Bunner’s – Simple and Delicious Gluten Free-Vegan Treats
by Ashley Wittig & Kevin MacAllister
Review - According to our family there is not a bad recipe in this book. They are all delicious. We have made a few revisions to certain recipes, but generally you can count on excellent results every time. - From Kelly’s Bake Shoppe in Burlington, Ontario
Made with Love – More than 100 Sweet and Savory Plant-Based Recipes for Every Moment in Life
by Kelly Childs and Erinn Weatherbie
Review – This is new to my cookbook stash, but I am sure they will be wonderful recipes if they are anything like the products they sell at Kelly’s Bake Shoppe. - From the Editors at America's Test Kitchen
The How Can It Be Gluten Free Cookbook
Review – This is another go to book and contains my favourite gluten-free flour recipe that I use to replace regular flour when converting recipes. I love that all the recipes have been tested by the G-F Testing Lab and conclusions are given for using different gluten-free flours. It also gives reasons why somethings don’t work well which helps with the learning curve. Recipes are certainly well tested and you can count on the results. - Another from the Editors at America's Test Kitchen
The How Can It Be Gluten Free Cookbook Volume 2
by the Editors at America’s Test Kitchen
Review – This is a recent addition to my cookbook stash. It does include 75+ recipes that are dairy free as well, but have yet to be tested in my kitchen. So much good information. I look forward to trying out the ATK Whole-Grain Gluten Free Flour Blend from this one. - From the experts at the Academy of Culinary Nutrition in Toronto
Academy of Culinary Nutrition’s 2019 From Scratch Cooking – digital only
by the experts at the Academy of Culinary Nutrition in Toronto
While you are on their website have a look at their blog: https://www.culinarynutrition.com/blog/
Another good read by Meghan Telpner of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition is UnDiet Eat your way to Vibrant Health - As well from Meghan Telpner of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition is
The UnDiet Cookbook – 130 Gluten Free Recipes for a Healthy and Awesome Life. It is well worth having a look at this one. A friend lent me this book, and I am going to have to purchase a copy of my own. - Although I am not a vegan, I have found that vegan recipes cover my sensitivities to dairy and eggs, and are usually easy to convert to gluten free. On the recommendation of Mississippi Vegan who I follow on Instagram, I started looking at recipes by Canadian Lauren Toyota.
Hot for Food Vegan Comfort Classics: 101 Recipes to Feed Your Face by Lauren Toyota was my first venture into vegan recipes and was well worth the purchase. In particular her recipes for sauces and dips helped me move past feeling deprived of things like nacho cheese, sour cream, hollandaise sauce and many more...there is life without dairy and eggs.
